Cord blood banking refers to the process of collecting and storing the blood from the umbilical cord and placenta after childbirth. This blood is rich in hematopoietic stem cells, which are the building blocks for blood and immune system cells. These stem cells can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, particularly those related to the blood and immune system, such as leukemia, lymphomas, and certain genetic disorders. At our lab we provide parents the option of storing their baby’s cord blood that can be used by the baby him/herself or the matched family member.
